Often called the one-eyed monster, there has been much debate over the television viewing habits of children and toddlers.

Being a mother to two toddlers myself, I have to say that I clearly understand both sides of the debate. I do see the pros and the cons of allowing children so young to be entertained by television.

It is in my opinion however, that when used wisely, television can actually be used as an educational tool that holds the potential to encourage and stimulate a love of learning in all toddlers.

Listed below are my favorite top five educational programs that will both teach and entertain toddlers of all ages...

1.) Little Einsteins- An early introduction to classical art and music, Little Einsteins provides children from one year to six years of age, with ample sound and visual stimulation for the ears, eyes, and brain.

From the musical compositions of Charles Francois Gounod, to the legendary artwork of Picasso, this educational program takes the young viewer on a densely cultural ride to major landmarks, historical wonders of the world, and exotic destinations that cultivates the most avid of imaginations.

2.) Word World- With it's kitschy catch phrase, "it's time to build a word," this vibrant and colorful show introduces one to six year olds to spelling and proper pronunciation in a cool and unique way.

In addition to the five main characters (Bear, Frog, Duck, Dog, and Sheep) each object in this show is literally made up of the individual letters used to spell the written word.

It's a great visualization concept that enables toddlers to learn and retain new information.

3.) Sid The Science Kid- "Investigate, Explore, Compare," is the motto of this science inspired children's program. With the help of the main character Sid, his three friends (Gabriela, Jarold and May), his teacher Suzie, and his parents and grandmother, Sid takes your little ones on a trip of scientific exploration.

Encouraging hands on discovery (through the observing, comparing and contrasting method), journal keeping, keeping your body healthy, and movement through the use of music, this program is great for your toddler's mind and body.

4. Curious George- So much more than a show about a curious little monkey, in keeping with it's title, this educational program encourages your toddler's inborn curiosity of life. Problem solving, counting, recycling, gardening, and the world of nature, are just a few of the lessons taught in this thirty minute show. It's truly amazing how much a little monkey's escapades can teach your toddler.

5.) Ni Hao Kai Lan - A program full of bright colors and fun characters, Ni Hao Kai Lan is an exciting show that provides your toddler with immense visual delights.

In addition to introducing your toddler to a new language (Mandarin Chinese is the language spoken), this sweet little program teaches toddlers how to solve interpersonal problems, how to share, how to follow instructions, and respect for others cultures and beliefs.

So if you're on the look out for "toddler tested - mother approved" ways to make learning fun, these television shows are a great addition to any educational program your toddler participates in.
