Music is truly a powerful tool - even when it comes down to seemingly mundane matters.

Without music; movies would lose some of their appeal; being placed on hold via telephone would be little more frustrating; and our commute back and forth to work would be much more redundant.

No one can deny the powerful effect music has on an individual.

Whether this effect be positive or negative however, often depends on the type of music listened to.

Nevertheless, extensive research has shown that certain types of music possess the ability to:

1.) ease symptoms of depression

2.) improve brain development in children

3.) improve one's memory

4.) aid in an ill patients recovery (this has especially been seen in the use of music therapy for babies in the NICU)...

just to name a few.

It should come as no surprise then, that researchers have found that music has the ability to directly effect one's eating habits as well.

* Music's Effect On Our Eating Habits - What The Research Shows.

The Tufts University Diet & Nutrition Letter, reported on a study researchers were conducting on the effect background music had on people's eating habits.

In one study conducted, the researchers counted the bites of food individuals took at meals while listening to various types of music. The result?

The research showed, that where there was an absence of background music, the participants "ate at an average rate of 3.9 bites per minute," with about a third of the participants requesting more food after clearing their plates.

On the other hand, at the presence of "spirited tunes," the diners "sped up to an average of 5.1 bites per minute!"

Not surprising however, when "calming flute instrumentals" were played, the eating pace of the participants slowed "to 3.2 bites per minute - and the bites became smaller."

That might not seem to be a huge difference between the case study where background music was absent (3.9 bites per minute) - however, these latter participants refrained from requesting second helpings; most left food on their plates; felt full; claimed that the food tasted better; and had "fewer digestive complaints."

* How Can This Benefit You And I?

Studies have clearly stated, that one safe way of losing weight involved eating slowly.

Since it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to signal the brain that it's full, eating slowly will help you to eat to satisfaction - without overdoing it.

With this vital piece of information then, it leads one to believe that with the use of calming background instrumental music, one can slow their food consumption, "retraining" both the stomach and the brain to take in less food which could potentially lead to weight lost.

Is there any truth to this theory? One will never know unless they try it themselves.

So if you're looking for a unique way to safely lose weight, or you simply desire to reduce your food consumption, why not try this theory on for size.

Even if it doesn't work for you, at least you'll achieve a bit of ambiance (or ambience) during your meal periods.

A great meal with great music - who could ask for anything more?

This is a great hub and well thought through. I am sure not many people thought about music in so many ways. Thank you for all these thoughts.

Thank you so much for dropping in Hello, hello. I think I just might have to try this one myself. It makes a lot of sense though. If music has such a powerful effect on us (whether it be good or bad), than it just might effect how much we eat.

It is true that music is a powerful tool affecting your mood and actions. My sister bought it to my attention some years ago. How if you go to a popular restaurant at peak time and they need you out in a hurry for the next wave of people, the tempo of the music will be fast. However, during slow times the music will be slower to cause you to eat slower and linger longer.

I read about this myself as well Money Glitch. Thanks for stopping by. I look forward to your feedback.

I guess this means eating in front of the telly is a big no-no if one is trying to whittle down the waist? :)

Music. I've loved music all my life. Since I tend to be a romantic, I love listening to songs that speak to the heart. Music is definitely underrated in my opinion. Funny that I should run across this hub this morning. About 20 minutes ago I turned the music station on and turned the tv off. As I sat here reading, some songs came on that made me want to get up and dance. A great motivator for me, since I tend to sit more than anything. The faster songs caused me to get up and get moving, a plus when I'm trying to clean :)

Thanks for sharing.

Feline Prophet - I've read that eating in front of the television is probably the worst place to eat. It tends to make you eat more. Thanks for stopping by.

trish1048 - I think music is so inspiring as well. I never thought of it as a way of weightloss however. Thanks for sharing and stopping by.

Yes music is a very powerful thing. I have done some research on how it effects your moods over time, and have experimented with trying different kinds of music during depression phases of my bipolar disorder. Listening to some music that has a message of success certainly has been helpful more than once. thank you for this hub!

Thanks for such interesting info, Veronica! As one who is very interested in the mind/body connection, I can see how this would be true! Did you know that some restaurants even change the music being played in the background to encourage people to eat faster and leave (when they are busy and need tables cleared) or to encourage them to linger and order dessert??

Interesting!

Wow, what a good hub! I've felt intuitively that music is a healer and improves your attitude, for a long time. (Depending on what music you listen to.) I never thought of music and weight loss, connected. I don't know how I missed this hub before now. Thanks!

Thanks so much CynthiaF61 for your feedback. I have read information about how resturants use music in their buisness. I think it's very intuitave of them to use music in such a way.

Hi, Paradise7 - I'm honored that you stopped by (you know you are one of my favorite authors on Hub pages- out of the many favorites I have here). I'm amazed as well at how something as simple as music, can affect us in either a negative or positive way. Thanks so much for your feedback.

Very interesting. I am a music lover, however I've taken to watching the television more lately, and never mind trying to concentrate on my writing. However right now I'm listening to music and it doesn't affect my concentration, so I guess I will use it as background for now. As for losing weight, it's worth a try. Say we landed on the topics page today, 11/2/09, take a look. Oh yes, very good hub.

Thanks for stoppping by fastfreta (I'm going to check the front page out right now) I'm going to try this out for myself - I too have found myself watching the televsion more, so I think we've both been in the same boat.

I believe avoiding processed foods is the first step for you to lose weight. They could taste excellent, but refined foods contain very little vitamins and minerals, making you eat more simply to have enough power to get through the day. Should you be constantly having these foods, changing to whole grain products and other complex carbohydrates will assist you to have more energy while feeding on less. Good blog post.
